OIST PhD Program 2027 in Okinawa, Japan
A fully funded five-year PhD in science at OIST in Japan, open to all nationalities, with full tuition, a yearly stipend, subsidized housing and relocation costs.
About
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) runs an interdisciplinary PhD program in science, taught and conducted in English. The program covers fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, neuroscience, mathematics, computer science and engineering. There are no departments, so students can work across subjects. OIST does not hold written entrance exams. Selection is based on your application file and online interviews.
OIST admits about 60 full-time PhD students each year, and all of them are fully funded through a Research Assistantship, whatever their nationality. You can apply with a bachelor’s degree. A master’s is not required. The first two years give broad training: you choose your thesis lab at the end of the first year and fix your thesis topic after a qualifying exam at the end of the second year. Students who enter with a STEM master’s need fewer course credits.
Host institution and country
OIST is a graduate university on the island of Okinawa, in the south of Japan. Its campus is in Onna village, on the west coast of the main island. Students live in the on-campus Campus Village for at least their first year. The university offers on-campus childcare, a health center and visa help from its student affairs team, which makes it easier to move to Japan with a family.
Financial benefits
- Full tuition, covered by the Research Assistantship
- Living support of about 2.6 million yen a year (taxable) in the first year, rising to about 3.6 million yen a year as you progress
- Subsidized on-campus housing: about 21,600 yen a month for a furnished single apartment, or 18,000 yen a month per person in a shared two-room apartment
- A one-way flight to Okinawa after your visa is issued, also for your spouse and children
- Reimbursement of the cost of shipping your belongings, up to a limit set by your country, plus a fixed transfer allowance for visa fees and local transport
- A separate budget for domestic and international research travel
- Student accident and liability insurance
Students are expected to study and research full time and may not take part-time jobs elsewhere. OIST encourages students to apply for external fellowships as well.
Eligibility criteria

Selection process and timeline
- Late December 2026: shortlisting results are sent out.
- 18 January to 7 February 2027: shortlisted applicants attend the online Admissions Workshop. Attendance is required. You interview with four faculty members by video.
- Mid-February 2027: final offers are sent.
- You can then enroll on 1 May 2027, 1 September 2027 or 1 January 2028.
OIST does not give feedback on decisions. You may reapply the next year if your academic record has progressed. Dates may change, so check the official page.
Tips for a strong application
- Name specific OIST faculty in your statement of purpose and explain how your interests connect to their work.
- Choose referees who know your research well. A detailed letter from a professor counts more than a short one from a famous name.
- Show research experience, such as a thesis, a lab project or a publication, and say what you learned from it.
- Prepare for the interviews by reviewing the basics of your field and recent papers from the labs you named.
- Submit early so you have time to follow up on missing letters before the deadline.
